Chevron STEM Education Award Frequently Asked Questions

WHY THIS AWARD?

Chevron is a proud supporter of STEM education and Fab educators, both formal and informal, demonstrating innovative ideas in teaching STEM through the use of digital fabrication (including electronics and programming), and hands-on learning. This award is a way for Chevron and the Fab Foundation to highlight people in the network who are making a change and doing amazing work to impact the lives and livelihoods of children and youth around the world.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE TO SUBMIT AN APPLICATION?

An educator in a formal school or informal educational organization (such as a museum, after-school program, other NGO) that develops and/or delivers student courses or programming impacting STEM education for K-12 students (ages 5 to 18). This includes approaches grounded in Fab Labs, that is, digital design, digital fabrication and/or programming and electronics.

All non-profit Fab Labs and makerspaces are eligible. The prize money can not go to a for profit business. If the applicant is working in partnership with a Fab Lab or makerspace, please just note that in the application.

Can the award be granted to an individual?

The cash prize will always be awarded to an organization, and not to an individual.

WHAT ARE THE SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS?

– Lab mission statement and/or design principles

– Information on how you will use the award

– Lesson plan for the activity you are currently doing or planning to implement with K-12 students/youth

– Lab background and bio on staff

What file types can be submitted as an attachment?

We accept the following file types: .stl, .jpg, .pdf, .ai, .tiff, .png, .svg, .doc, .bmp, .dmf, .gif, .cdr, .eps, and .studio3.

WHAT CRITERIA MAKES FOR A SUCCESSFUL APPLICATION?

Judges will review your application for six areas of focus. This includes innovation, philosophy, originality, replication, benefit, and mission.

HOW MUCH IS THE AWARD PRIZE?

The award prizes are $5,000 for first place, $3,000 for second place, and $1,000 for third place.

WHO ARE THE JUDGES?

We select members of the global network who come from a wide range of experiences and are committed to student learning, and the Fab Lab Network mission. This also includes past winners of the CVX STEM Education Award.

WHAT IS THE SELECTION PROCESS LIKE?

Each applicant is required to complete the application and submit it for consideration by Friday, June 28th at noon ET. Applications will be reviewed by a committee of network members on a rolling basis. The Fab Lab network is an open source knowledge sharing community. Therefore, all submissions will be public and shareable throughout the network.

WHEN DO I FIND OUT ABOUT THE RESULTS?

Winners will be notified in July and formally announced at Fab 15.

Do you have to attend the conference to accept the award?

While we would love for all winners to be there for the presentation of the physical award, you are not required to be at FAB15 in order to win the award. If you cannot attend FAB15 and you are a winner, we ask that you send us a video or have someone accept on your behalf. The cash prize will be sent after FAB15.
