Summary

This is a 3 part lesson for primary school students to learn about the needs of plants. This lesson was created for grades 3-5 in China. They learn about the key parts of plants and some basic information about what plants can do to help us in our daily lives. This includes being a food, material, and oxygen source that we depends on to live.

This lesson also discusses that plants have specific needs in their amounts of water and sunlight, to ensure that students do not over-water their plants after planting their seeds. It also talks about how deep to plant the seeds and a good strategy of how to water their plants after they get leaves, to avoid root rot and shallow roots.

Finally, this lesson includes files for your laser cutter to make a simple sign that students can write on to remind them of their specific plants needs and to not over-water. Hope you enjoy!

The Instructions

Before class begins

If your students are not Chinese, edit the PPT for any EAL learners to help them understand key vocabulary. Make sure the PPT works with your schools curriculum standards for whatever grade you are teaching. Ensure you have enough pots/space for students to grow their seeds, with good soil. Laser cut the sign for the garden. Get a marker for the students to write on the sign.

Open the PPT and work through the slides until you finish the first PPT. Then, take a trip outside to check out the garden.

The second lesson, work through the PPT until you reach the slide about the sign, then take the students out to water their plants.

On the third lesson, complete the powerpoint.

Ensure you are pausing frequently to ensure all students know the key points and vocabulary.
