Summary

In this series of online workshops, participants will attend 5 days online, each day they will have a one-hour session to learn about 3D scanning, 3D design, and 3D printing technology.

They will learn how to scan 3D objects using their smartphones and Qlone application.

What You'll Need

  • Internet connection
  • sense 3D scanner (optional)
  • Smartphone
  • Qlone Application – https://www.qlone.pro/
  • Tinkercad – https://www.tinkercad.com/
  • Vectary – https://www.vectary.com/

The Instructions

Day 1 - INTRO OF 3D SCANNING AND MODELING

3D scanning technology is used for creating 3D models of real-world objects. In this session participants will get an introduction to 3D scanning technologies and their related applications, then they will get introduce to sense 3D scanner and learn how objects can be scanned.

  • Briefly explain the camp idea and activities.
  • Introduce the engineering design challenge.
  • Introduce 3D scanning, what is 3D scanning and how it converts the real objects into digital files.
  • Show Video about 3D scanning and its applications.
  • Introduce different 3d scanning tools.
  1. Laser scanning.
  2. Structured light 3D scanning.
  3. Photogrammetry 3D scanning.
  • Introduce 3D sense scanner and show participants video about it
  • Show participants how to scan 3D object using sense scanner in live.
  • Introduce 3D modeling and some of its applications.
  • Introduce different smartphone 3D scanning applications.
  • show a video about 3D scanning by using smartphones.
  • Ask participants to print the Qlone mat paper and prepare it for the next class.

Day 2 - 3D SCANNING WITH QLONE

In this lesson, participants will use a 3D scanning mobile application (Qlone) to scan related objects and generate a 3D model, then they will be introduced to 3D modeling web-based tool - TINKERCAD that will enable them to import and create 3d models and modify them.

  • Introduce participants to Qlone app.
  • show a video about 3D scanning by using smartphones.
  • Show a video about Qlone Tips and Best Practices
  • Ask participants to use the scanning application and scan different objects.
  • Give participants time to scan objects.
  • Explain the relation between 3d scanning and 3d design.
  • Introduce tinkercad.
  1. Basic objects – how to interact with objects and scale them.
  2. How to change colors.
  3. How to move objects and control the camera view.
  • Give participants access to Tinkercad account.
  • Challenge the participants to design Al Sabha

Day 3 - 3D printing and modifying objects

In this session, participants will get introduced to digital manufacturing technologies such as 3D printing and its applications, then they will learn new tools in Tinkercad software to import and modify 3d objects of Al Sabha.

  • Explain what is meant by digital fabrication.
  • Introduce digital manufactured machines.
  • Introduce 3D printing.
  • Show participants a video about 3D printing.
  • Introduce Cure software and show participants how to prepare objects for 3D printing.
  • Introduce tinkercad.
  1. How to cut objects.
  2. How to group objects.
  3. How to align objects.
  • Share with the participants’ 3D files of Al Sabha
  • Show participants pictures of the Sabha and explain how to design each part.

Day 4 - Customize 3D Sabha

On this day, participants will get introduced to different Design software, their applications, and what each one is dedicated for. In the end, they will be introduced to new tools in Tinkercad software to create the 3D design of the Islamic Sabha.

  • Explain to participants the main considerations in 3d design for 3D printing such as the 45-degree rule and connections.
  • Explain more tools and options in Tinkercad:

  1. How to do cut.
  2. Align.
  3. Mirror

  • Explain how to export the STL file.
  • Introduce them to how to prepare the design for 3D printing using Cura software and how the G-code can be generated.

On the last day, participants will get introduced to the Masbaha material – Amber - and its importance in Qatari heritage then they will be asked to customize new materials for their 3D Sabha.
